Grades P-6 have adopted a new program called "Peaceful Schools." On each Day 4 for
approximately 30 minutes, 15 groups of students meet with a leader to work on "peace
lessons." Each group consists of 10 students allowing children from each grade and age level
an opportunity to work with each other. Respect, self-esteem, caring, sharing, friendship,
politeness, working together in harmony are the topics that will be highlighted throughout the
year. It is our hope that the benefits of our team work and commitment will be reflected in the
words and actions of our elementary students inside and outside the school environment.

Our grades eleven and twelve students attended a Career Fair at SAERC in Port Hawkesbury
on September 24th . Representatives from more than thirty colleges, universities and private
institutions were present to provide information and answer questions regarding the various
programs offered in their schools. The more popular institutions also offered two one half hour
sessions to give more detailed information to students.

Congratulations to nine of our students who won competitions at the Inverness County level in
August and who went on to participate in 4-H competitions at the provincial show in Truro on
the weekend of October 1st to 3rd. All students placed in the top ten in Nova Scotia in their
project areas - beef, dairy, waterfowl, garden, computer and horse. Congratulations go as well
to Jan van Zutphen who coached the Inverness County 4-H Tug-of-War team to a first place
victory in Nova Scotia. Mrs. Doris Carver is general leader of the Port Hood Islandview 4-H
Club and a thank-you goes to her for her generous leadership.

During the day many requests come into the school concerning hair cuts, dentist appointments,
babysitting, jobs, supervision after school etc. etc. The school is such a busy place we are
concerned that a message will not be delivered and a student will return home to an empty
house, or an appointment will be missed. Please try to make arrangements before your child
leaves home in the morning. If a change of plan is necessary, please drop into the school and
make your child aware. Thank-you for your cooperation.

Our Bhutanese friends Sumitra, Gyemtsho, and Raika have returned to St. F. X. where they
have spent their final week before returning to Bhutan. At school it was obvious from seeing
the children's faces and listening to their comments that they enjoyed Sumitra, Gyemtsho and
Raika. We all shared our experiences and knowledge in curriculum and assessment areas. We
learned a lot. On their last day here, individual classes celebrated their guests in their own way
with treats, cards, and gifts. There was sadness in seeing their time with us come to an end.
We enjoyed an afternoon of dancing to the music of John Morris Rankin and Betty Lou Beaton
in our school gym. It was a chance for our guests to get a lst glimpse into our culture and a
chance to try a set themselves. To honor our guests Mary and Joe Morris hosted a much
appreciated "good-bye" and "thank you" evening . Sumitra, Gyemtsho and Raika assured us
that they would remember us and the special hositality they were shown while living in this
community.

Network Of Innovative Schools (NIS) Update:
|
Last Spring our school was chosen as one of the 24 members of Industry Canada's "Network of
Innovative Schools". We are now preparing to implement the new technology we have been
able to access through this project. On September 30th , we were very pleased to welcome our
NIS contact person to our school. Marcel Labelle stopped in to meet with staff and discuss our
future plan. With his support we hope to have a very successful and interesting year.
|
As of now we have purchased a still digital camera and a digital movie camera. We are about to
order a computer and software with capabilities to edit the footage we take with these cameras.
|
This summer Wanda Stewart took the course "Avid Cinema" at Acadia University and Darryl
Mac Leod this week is attending a three day "Avid Cinema" workshop. These sessions will
equip them with the skills necessary to edit the footage we will take with the digital cameras.
|
Our school home page is up and running and will be constantly changing as we update it with
events occurring in our school.
|
|
We are aware there are mistakes at present and we will be happy to have input from you as we
constantly edit.
|
We will be recruiting students to edit and construct our school home page. We want this to be
the work of our students under the guidance of staff advisors. Our school web page will have
input from class generated material as well as from the independent work of students working
after school in our "Web Club".
|
We wish to extend an invitation to parents and members of our community to participate in this
project. We are interested in links and content for our web page. The possibilities are
unlimited.
